You can expect something exceptional while exploring Takdah. Are you someone searching for a perfect holiday destination surrounded by blooming orchids, lush green tea gardens, magnificent mountain views, and pine forests, yet in search of a low-key place? Then Takdah is your perfect search. This is the perfect treasure secret, close to 28 km from Darjeeling. Takdah was originally referred to or spelt as Tukdah, a word of Lepcha origin meaning fog or mist, as the place usually remained covered in fog.
I explored peaceful orchid gardens, British-era bungalows and misty hills in Takdah, where I was embraced by nostalgic charm and absolute tranquillity during my trip to this peaceful destination.
Takdah is a quiet hamlet located in Darjeeling, which is about 28 km from Darjeeling in the Rungleee Rungliot district, at an altitude of nearly 5,000 ft. This serene village has a prominent colonial history, which is reflected through the prominent area of British cantonment, established during the British Raj. This serene retreat in the lap of Darjeeling is popular for its tea gardens, magnificent mountain views, heritage bungalows established during the British era, and many more.
A season-wise distribution of weather and temperature of Takdah is mentioned below
| Season | Temperature | Weather | Best activity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring (March to May) | 10°C – 20°C | clear skies and pleasant | birdwatching, nature walks and sightseeing |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | 15°C – 22°C | rainy and misty | quiet retreats |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | 10°C – 18°C | crisp, scenic and cool | cultural visits and photography |

The best time to visit Takdah is between October and March, when the sky remains clear, azure blue, and you can also enjoy/experience the chilling wintry winds against your skin. However, you can also plan a trip to Takdah somewhere between April and May, when you can experience a combination of summer and spring, with clear skies and a great time to explore the nearby attractions and scenic beauty. However, during June, the region experiences the first showers of rain of the season, with the gradual onset of the monsoon season, up until the last weeks of September. During the monsoon season, we usually recommend tourists refrain from planning a trip to Takdah as the visibility is poor with the region being covered with clouds. Sightseeing, trekking through the forest lands and taking a leisurely walk are dangerous during the monsoon due to slippery surfaces.
I visited Takdah in April, where I enjoyed serene weather and was mesmerised by the sight of vibrant blooming flowers.
| Months | Weather | Footfall | Category | Best for |

| Winter (December-February) | crisp and cold | Low to Moderate | Shoulder Season | peaceful retreats and honeymoon. |
Takdah has some of the most spectacular and sprawling tea gardens, with Rungli Rungliot tea garden being the most stunning of them all in the region. This tea garden was named by a monk, as believed by the locals, which means “Thus far and no further”. You can also explore some other tea gardens like the Namring, Gielle and Pubang. Interestingly, you will also find a hanging bridge right below the Pubang Tea Garden.

They came to believe it must have been Lord Buddha playing the trumpet.
